How do eclipses occur?
SOLAR ECLIPSE
A solar eclipse occurs when the new moon completes its round around the earth and moves between the sun and the earth blocking out the rays of the sun which casts a shadow on parts of the planet. So in a solar eclipse the moon is in a direct line between the sun and the earth.
LUNAR ECLIPSE
A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon goes through the Earth's shadow. Similar to the solar eclipse when the Earth passes through the Moon's shadow.
